Why is it an issue?
The baking industry is committed to producing safe, nutritious (and delicious) baked products. Our industry strictly adheres to a set of processes to provide healthy and safe products, constantly improving food safety practices.
DEVELOPING AND GROWING RELATIONSHIPS IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN
ABA co-leads the Food & Beverage Issue Alliance, which has grown to more than 60 members with eleven active working groups. This group represents a wide swath of the FDA-regulated food industry. The Alliance serves as a resource and conduit for ongoing dialogue with federal agencies including FDA and USDA as well as Congress on key issues impacting nutrition and food safety policy, and ultimately, the American consumer.
ABA's position on food safety
The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) established sweeping reform to federal food safety laws. New requirements included: preventative process controls; hazard evaluation; traceability; safety of imports; recordkeeping and access; inspection; FDA enforcement powers and recalls. As regulatory proposals on these issues are published, ABA worked with our Members to develop consensus policy positions to respond to the Agency as well as cost-effective strategies for bakers to implement food safety requirements.
