Voluntary Ingredient Pledges

Bakers have made recent commitments to voluntarily phase out ingredients such as certified FD&C colors, azodicarbonamide (ADA), and potassium bromate.

FD&C Colors: ABA announced its “Baked Goods in Schools Pledge,” a voluntary industry commitment to eliminate the use of certified FD&C colors in all baked goods provided to K-12 schools through the National School Breakfast, Lunch, and Competitive Foods Programs by the beginning of the 2026–2027 school year.

FD&C Colors: ABA announced its new “Baked Goods FD&C Colors Pledge,” a voluntary industry commitment to eliminate certified FD&C colors from baked goods across the United States by December 2028.

Azodicarbonamide: The baking industry is nearing its phase out of azodicarbonamide (ADA) from baked goods, with full completion of the phase out across the United States expected by December 2026.

Potassium Bromate: ABA announced its new “Baked Goods Ingredient Pledge,” a voluntary industry commitment to complete the phase out of the use of potassium bromate from baked goods across the United States by December 2026.
