November 19, 2009 - Senate Committee Unanimously Passes Bi-Partisan Food Safety Bill - ABA Successful in Mitigating Impact on Bakers

WASHINGTON D.C. – “Food safety is the highest priority for bakers – it is incorporated into every aspect of our members’ daily operations, and as such, ABA commends the Senate HELP Committee for addressing these critical issues,” said American Bakers Association President and CEO Robb MacKie. “ABA is pleased that many of the baking industry’s concerns were addressed by the committee. On November 18, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) unanimously passed S. 510, The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act. This bipartisan bill seeks to enhance food safety and consumer confidence in America’s food supply.   More...

November 16, 2009 - ABA Meets with USDA to Discuss Nutrition Policy

On Nov. 16, ABA, along with other food industry partners, met with the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion officials to discuss stakeholder concerns regarding the ongoing review of the Dietary Guidelines and the My Pyramid revisions. “It was a good opportunity for ABA to communicate with USDA on recommendations to aid transparency to the process for stakeholders,” said ABA Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs Lee Sanders. “We also had a good dialogue on efforts to improve communications to the public on key nutrition messages through interactive innovation as the review process moves forward for the food guide pyramid. ABA will be at the table,” Ms. Sanders concluded.

November 10, 2009 - House Passes Health Care Bill Detrimental to the Baking Industry - Higher Taxes and More More Government Mandates Included in the Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. – “Despite the universal calls to contain skyrocketing health care costs, Congress has unfortunately taken steps this past weekend that will continue to harm the U.S. economy by passing the misnamed Affordable Health Care for America Act,” said ABA President and CEO Robb MacKie. “This bill does nothing to reduce health care costs in America but in fact would raise taxes on bakers and their suppliers through the many onerous provisions included in the bill.”  More...

November 3, 2009 - Registration Now Open for Sanitary Design Workshop for Equipment Manufacturers

Leading food manufacturers have begun working together to educate others about food safety. At the Equipment & Plant Design Workshop for Allergen/Pathogen Control, representatives from food manufacturing companies will lead engineers, sanitarians, plant managers, and other vested individuals through a program that targets allergens and pathogens in low moisture foods.  Participants will come away with practical and proven approaches to cleaning, sanitary design, equipment layout, and personnel requirements that utilize verifiable, economically sound and HACCP- supported processes. The workshop includes equipment design demonstrations using photos and prototypes, and the introduction of a process for continuous improvement.  REGISTER NOW!

October 29, 2009 - ABA Effort to Limit Flour Dust TLV Clears Major Hurdle

“ABA took a major step toward achieving a long-time policy priority with the announcement by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) to exclude the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Values (TLV®) as part of its revamp of the Hazard Communication Standard,” said American Bakers Association President & CEO Robb MacKie. “ABA has been a leader in exposing the weaknesses of the ACGIH TLV® process and our work is finally paying off.”  More...
