ABA Staff Helps GFF Spread Message About Fortification of Enriched Bread with Folic Acid
On Sunday, April 27, ABA staff, on behalf of the Grain Foods Foundation (GFF), participated in another successful March of Dimes' (MOD) Marching for Babies event held in Washington, D.C., on the National Mall. Hundreds of people gathered for the event which raises money to assist parents and families of premature babies. GFF sponsors the event as part of their commitment to raise awareness about the healthful benefits and role that B vitamins and folic acid, in particular, play in preventing birth defects. Fortification of enriched grain with folic acid has accounted for a 36 percent decline in neural-tube birth defects in the Hispanic population and a 34 percent decline among the white, non-Hispanic population between 1995 and 2002.
ABA staff, joined by NAMA President Betsy Faga, passed out bagels and cream cheese and cereal bars to attendees to give them lots of energy and fuel for their bodies to get them ready for the "March for Babies."
GFF bags and recipe cards were also popular items handed out to the MOD walkers. "Slice" was on hand to have fun with the walkers and get them energized about bread. Hundreds of participants proudly displayed their "I Love Bread" stickers during the walk.
